In 1992, three deer exclosure cages were constructed in Peninsula State Park. Exclosure cages are designed as an experimental “control” that prevents deer from browsing vegetation. This helps biologists make comparisons between landscapes. Peninsula’s exclosure cages were in need of repairs, and the need become critical following tree damage to the cages after the 9/29/11 wind storm. Whitetails Unlimited provided grant money for repairs. Timing was excellent since the Friends of Peninsula State Park awarded its first research endowment grant to a project that inventoried all of Peninsula’s exclosures.
