Friends of Peninsula State Park Receive State Farm Grant

Friends of Peninsula State Park (FPSP) received a $500 grant from State Farm thanks to retired insurance agent John Plume.

Plume worked as a ranger at Peninsula and Newport state parks in the late 1960s. Last year, Plume volunteered at Peninsula, clearing brush and litter from the shore. In exchange for service work, State Farm awarded FPSP the grant. It will be used to support park nature education and trail improvements.

2012 Research Grant Opportunity

Research funds are available to students through the Friends of Peninsula State Park (FPSP) research endowment fund.

FPSP established the research endowment fund to support academic studies that help inform resource management decisions at the park; preference is given to proposals that fit this criterion.

Priority will be given to proposals that address; 1) the Park’s Dwarf Lake Iris (Iris lacustris),2) the occurrence of reptiles on the property, 3) the occurrence of amphibians on the property, particularly Wisconsin Species of Special Concern.

Peninsula to Offer New Years Hike

Check out FIRST DAY events from around the state!

Peninsula State Park will be offering a FIRST DAY HIKE in conjunction with other state parks across the nation. Ours begins at 10 a.m. from the Nature Center on January 1, 2012. Park admission is free at Peninsula on January 1 and trail pass requirements are waived that day, too.

Even though its Packer Sunday, the Badgers are playing, and some of you will be taking the Polar Bear Plunge at Jacksonport, consider joining naturalist Kathleen Harris New Year’s Day morning!

The Nature Center will likely be open the afternoon of January 1, perhaps with the radio on so we can hear the game! If anyone is interested in helping staff the Nature Center that afternoon, please let Kathleen (kathleen.harris@wisconsin.gov) know. Kids are welcome to help staff the Center, too.

NOTE: Peninsula will have a full schedule the week between December 25 and January 1, as usual. Stay tuned.

It is accessible only by boat. Engelmar Trail, a one-mile rustic path, meanders the circumference of the 38-acre island.
